What We Do

Joining Care Proceedings as an Intervenor

An intervenor is someone who is not a core party but is granted permission by the court to join the case. This typically happens when their involvement is necessary to help resolve a key dispute, such as identifying who caused a child’s injuries.

Intervenors generally participate in only the portion of the proceedings that directly concerns them. They are provided with limited documents relevant to their involvement.

The most common reason for an intervenor to join care proceedings is when a child has suffered a non-accidental injury and the intervenor had contact with the child during the relevant time period.

An intervenor presents their case during a finding of fact hearing, where the court seeks to determine the cause of injury and whether the injury was accidental.

Potential intervenors can include extended family, partners, neighbours, childminders, nursery workers, and other individuals who had contact with the child. This group is referred to as the pool of possible perpetrators.
